Design for access and mobility – General requirements for access – New building work
This Standard specifies the design requirements for new building work, as required by the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards (Premises Standards), to provide access for people with disabilities. It is also important to understand that even though AS1428.1 – 2009 has a title “new building work” it does not or is not limited to new buildings. AS1428.1 – 2009 has particular attention given to –
- continuous accessible paths of travel and circulation spaces for people who use wheelchairs;
- access and facilities for people with ambulatory disabilities; and
- access for people with sensory disabilities.
Disabled Floor Finishes are required for Accessible Sanitary Facilities (Disabled Toilets) as well as Ambulant Toilets. As these are a statutory requirement it is extremely important to ensure that the accessible fittings that are being install meet he Australian Standards requirements. For more information regarding the requirements for Disability Accessible Floor Finishes and the compliance with AS1428.1 – 2009, please feel free to contact ASN.
