Legislation for Disability Access & Mobility
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1992 is the main piece of legislation that covers individuals with a disability and/or people associated with people with a disability. The DDA makes it unlawful to discriminate based on a disability that someone; has, had or may have in the future.
It is therefore essential that the legislative framework is understood correctly. At the top of the tree is the DDA followed by the Building Codes of Australian (BCA) then the referenced Australian Standards. The section of the BCA that specifically addresses access and mobility is Section D3 with references to the AS1428 suite of Australian Standards.
