Today there are a lot more Disability Access Consultants than there were 5 years ago. This is a great advancement as disability access to the built environment has been identified as an extremely important element to ensure disability access and egress is provided and caters to all community members.
It’s equally important that when engaging the services of a Disability Access Consultant that they meet a few criteria.
We’ve outlined the minimum criteria below.
Accredited:
The Disability Access Consultants peak body is the Association of Consultants in Access Australia (ACAA) www.access.asn.au. Through the ACAA members are awarded different levels of membership based on their capabilities, services, and qualifications. It is a MUST that the disability access consultant that you engage is an ACCREDITED DISABILITY ACCESS CONSULTANT: Such consultants can be found by searching the ACAA database. ASN is Accredited Disability Access Consultants.
Professional Indemnity Insurance:
Any consultant that is engaged must be insured. As disability access consultants provide specialist advice and recommendations relating to the provisions of disability access as per Australian Standards and legislative requirements – they MUST be insured to give such advice. We have $10 Million PI insurance coverage.
Public Liability Insurance:
Like Professional Indemnity Insurance any Access Consultant must have Public Liability Insurance. This ensures that the engaged consultant is covered for any potential liabilities relating to provided services and the like. We have $20 Million PL insurance coverage.
