Visual indicators on glazing are a small design detail that can prevent a very real access and safety problem. Fully glazed doors, frameless entries, sidelights and glass walls can be difficult to identify, particularly where reflections, low contrast, bright backgrounds or busy interiors make the glass read like an open path.
For architects, building designers, developers, building surveyors, tenancy coordinators, facility managers and owners, the issue is practical: will a person approaching the glass understand that there is a barrier, a door, a sidelight or a glazed screen before they reach it? Why glazing visibility needs fresh attention
Glazed entries and office partitions are common in contemporary commercial, education, health, retail, hospitality and civic buildings. They can improve daylight, openness and wayfinding, but they also create risk when the boundary between circulation space and glass is not obvious.
The regulatory context has also shifted. The Australian Building Codes Board explains that the amended Premises Standards and NCC 2022 Amendment 2 took effect on 29 July 2025, with AS 1428.1:2021 now referenced. Standards Australia describes AS 1428.1:2021 as the current access and mobility standard referenced by the NCC and Premises Standards for new building work. For glazing safety more broadly, Standards Australia’s AS 1288:2021 overview explains that glass selection and installation must consider factors such as human impact, fixing methods and building compliance.

1. Identify glazing that may be mistaken for an opening
Do not start by asking whether a decal has been specified. Start by identifying the glazing that people encounter along an accessible path of travel. This may include frameless glass doors, fully glazed swing or sliding doors, sidelights beside entries, glass partitions at corridor ends, shopfront glazing, lobby glazing, meeting room walls and glazed screens near reception or waiting areas.
The question is whether the glass could reasonably be mistaken for a doorway, opening or continuation of the path. That depends on more than the glazing itself. Door frames, mullions, handles, lighting, floor finish, reflections, signage, furniture and the position of people moving through the space can all affect whether the glass is visible.
2. Review both sides of the approach
A glazing marker may look clear from one side but disappear from the other. This is common where one side has a dark floor, dark furniture or shaded background and the other side has bright daylight, pale walls or strong reflections. A marker selected against one background may not provide useful visibility from the opposite direction.
Project teams should review likely approach paths, not only elevation drawings. For a building entrance, that may mean checking the view from outside during daytime and from inside at night. For a tenancy fitout, it may mean checking the corridor approach, the meeting room side and the reception side. 3. Coordinate markers with branding and wayfinding
Branding can support visibility, but it can also undermine it. A scattered pattern, small logo, transparent frosted film or decorative motif may look attractive without performing as a clear visual indicator. Conversely, a well-planned strip, motif or privacy band can align with the brand while still making the glass apparent.
The access review should happen before final graphics are ordered. Check whether the design is continuous enough, visible enough and positioned in the right relationship to the approach path. Also check that wayfinding signs, tenancy branding and safety decals do not compete with each other or create visual clutter.
4. Check opacity, contrast and background together
Visual indicators are not just about colour. A translucent or frosted product may appear visible in one lighting condition and almost disappear in another. Background conditions matter: a marker may be seen against a dark chair but not against a pale floor, or may work in a rendered image but fail after furniture and lighting are installed.
For this reason, selection should consider opacity, contrast, background and viewing direction together. Ask suppliers for clear product information and test the proposed finish against the actual surrounding finishes where possible. 5. Avoid relying on the door handle alone
A handle, pull plate, automatic-door sensor or frame may help people understand that a panel is a door, but it may not make adjacent glass visible. Sidelights and glazed walls can still be mistaken for openings, especially in minimalist fitouts where hardware is small, frames are slim and reflections are strong.

6. Check installation quality, not just specification
A correct specification can still become a poor installation. Common defects include markers being installed too high or too low, stopping short of the glazing width, being interrupted by mullions or logos, being applied to only one leaf of a doorway, being hidden by blinds or furniture, or being installed with a product different from the approved sample.
For construction-stage projects, inspect glazing after the actual film, decal or marker has been installed. For existing buildings, include glazing markers in the onsite access audit scope. Photographs should record the approach direction and background conditions, not just a close-up of the marker.
7. Consider maintenance and future tenancy changes
Visual indicators can be damaged, removed, replaced or covered during tenancy works. Glass doors may be cleaned aggressively, decals may peel, shopfront graphics may change, privacy film may be replaced, and new signage may be added without access review.
Facility managers should know which glazing markers are required for access and safety, and should include them in maintenance checks. Tenancy design guidelines should also make clear that branding or privacy treatments cannot remove required visibility.
8. Resolve uncertainty before procurement
Late questions about glazing markers can delay shop drawings, signage packages, practical completion and building approval. It is better to clarify the access strategy before procurement. That may include reviewing the drawings, elevations, product samples, contrast data, lighting assumptions and the likely path of travel.
